Thinking points for psychotherapists and philosophers: Psychotherapy as a moral treatment. A discussion of Luis Charland’s brief paper: “Moral treatment”.

One of the most controversial topics in psychotherapy is to what extent psychotherapy is a process of moral re-education, especially in cases of personality disorders. The idea harks back to the founder of the modern psychotherapeutic clinic, psychiatrist Philippe Pinel, and has been particularly influentially argued for in modern literature by the renowned psychologist Luis Charland.

This seminar focuses on Charland’s paper “Moral Treatment”, which opens a number of key perspectives on psychotherapy. The seminar lasts 2 hours and participants are issued a certificate of attendance that counts towards the satisfaction of the criteria for enrolment in psychotherapeutic training as Modal Integrative Psychotherapists, within the Institute for Practical Humanities. It is also potentially useful to all psychotherapists and practitioners in a variety of counselling modalities.
